Our 10th visit to ‘our’ special cottage!
Surely that says it all?!
Thank you once again for the PERFECT antidote to real life…
This was our second stay at these cottages. The Byre suits us just fine !! As numerous guests above have stated the location is fantastic. If a switch off holiday is what’s needed, then this is the place. Night life can be found a short dolmus ride away for good restaurants or even lively pubs up in the town of Hisaranou. 50% of the holiday we didn’t leave the cottage because it’s that nice. We’ll be back for sure. Thanks for helping out and local advice from Jon during our stay.
The cottage is in a fantastic location on top of a small crag giving 360 degree views within a majestic valley. One ridge away from the bustle and commerce of Hirosanu/Oludeniz (if required) and 4k from a beautiful bay (in the oppoisite direction) with good snorkelling. Plenty of good rustic restaurants within 2k and some wonderful cultural sights further away (eg. The Lycian ruined city of Tlos). All in all an idyllic location for a charming cottage equipped with a welcoming plunge pool on a hot day!
Another fantastic week staying in the Byre !:)
I think this is the 5th year we have stayed at Sakli Vadi (we always said we would not go to the same place twice!), and we still haven’t been to every restaurent in the valley. We have stayed in all the cottages and they are all lovely.
It is a great place to relax and unwind but there is also so much in the local area to see and do. We visited the amazing Patara beach with its long sandy beach and warm waters. We went on a gulet trip and spent some time in Oludeniz. Already booking for next year as there is still so much that we haven’t seen.
We returned for our 9th visit to Sakli Vadi this year, and I have to say it is the perfect antidote to busy lives!
The perfect hideaway to relax. I always arrive, look out over that wonderful view from the pool and feel all the stresses of life melt away!! Than you Jon and Sandy for always making us so welcome. The cottage provides cool comfort from the intense Turkish August heat, there is nothing more that we need as you have thought of everything! Have already booked our 10th visit for next August!! Says it all!
I have stayed in Sakli Vadi many times and have to say The Byre is my absolute favourite for a perfect getaway. Leaving the stresses of London behind me, I spent a week either lying by the plunge pool that overlooks the beautiful Kaya Valley or visiting the local beaches that the area has to offer.
There are numerous restaurants and places to explore but it is the cottages that are at the centre of the holiday as they provide a beautiful space to live in and relax. Jon, Sandy and their lovely staff are always at hand to help and advise but also to make the stay even more comfortable and easy. I recommend the cottages to anyone that will listen and will definitely be coming back as soon as I can!
Carol and I absolutely enjoyed our stay in The Byre in June. It was so quiet and peaceful, we just did not want to go home. Thank you for making our stay in Turkey the best. We always feel like we are going home when we arrive in Turkey and would love to live there but we have four young grandchildren who we just couldn’t leave.
Thanks once again and hopefully we’ll be able to return to Kaya soon.
Best wishes from Carol and Paul Smith, Norwich
Our stay of four days at The Byre felt too short in the end. Sandy and Jon have done an amazing restoration job, managing to strike the right balance between quaint/rural and modern/convenient.
The location is truly stunning (The Byre has the best views of all the cottages) and was a perfect place to relax, but there are also plenty of places to visit and things to do in the wider area. If you can’t be bothered to cook, there are also plenty of good places to eat nearby. Check out the visitor’s book in the cottage for recommendations on places to visit and eat. The advice was pretty reliable.
The Byre left us with memories that will last a long time and we can see why people return. Maybe we will too one day.
We stayed at The Byre in May/June 2013. It was the most amazing place to stay, absolutely beautiful. The staff were excellent and the nearby restaurants were first class. The area is truly stunning and we will certainly be going back in the future. If you go for a visit you will not be disappointed.
We stayed at the Byre in June 2012. From the moment we got there until we left it was excellent.
The location is perfect, the cottage is divine, everything was fantastic. We have stayed around the area in different places many times and we can honestly say, we will now never stay anywhere other that here, we loved it.
The staff were so nice and the people in the village cannot do enough for you ; perfect!! You will not be disappointed.
Date of Stay: 18th-25th Sept 2011.
What a find from a random internet search of self-catering accommodation in Turkey! Having been tempted by the beautiful photos on the Sakli Vadi Web-site, we were taken aback by the actual beauty of the location and quality of the accommodation when we arrived. The Byre is a wonderful place to relax and from which to explore the local area. We spent our week partly by the pool, partly walking to local beaches through the woods and over the hills and also enjoying the local restaurants. We left wanting more so we’ll be back! Thanks to Jon, Sandy and all the staff who were so helpful both prior to and during our stay.

This was our second trip to the Kayakoy area however our first to Sakli Vadi, a hidden gem. The Byre is a beautiful villa, artistically decorated, with a private courtyard and a plunge pool. We found it very private and quiet, with a fabulous view in a peaceful rural setting. As we have always favoured rural areas in our lifestyle, this was a definite plus.
We stayed for two weeks in November, had great hot weather without the excessive heat of mid-summer. In fact we would go into Fethiye, find it muggy and be grateful to return to the mountain air. At this time of year the hustle and bustle of tourist season is largely done. A young cat we named Meow Cat adopted us for stay.
During our stay we travelled to many archaeological sites. Anyone with this interest will find the area very rich in history. For those looking for a change from the beach scene, we recommend checking out the larger sites Tlos and Xanthos. We also did some swimming at nearby Gremlier Beach and taking picnics to Patara Beach with its great stretch of sand. We hired a local boat to take us to the island off Gremlier Beach and hike the site with its ruined churches and other structures.
Our stay was part of a larger trip through Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey. We were happy for the downtime in one place, being able to cook our own meals once again, having the space to stretch out, enjoy reading Byre “library” books, not having to cart our luggage daily, plus dozing and drinking wine and rum and Cokes by the plunge pool.
We highly recommend that you consider this peaceful place to enjoy your vacation. It appears to be an ideal place for families.
Don’t pack your bags too heavily – you’ll have to trundle them across some pathways and steps to get to the cottage. Do enjoy your stay!
We have been back to Byre Cottage 4 times now and hope to keep on coming back to this beautiful, peaceful place. From the moment we arrive, we are relaxed and ready unwind. We round each day off, by sitting on the terrace overlooking the valley, watching the stars, perfect! There are some really good restaurants nearby, plus long or short walks over the hill, through Kaya Koy to Olu Deniz or Gemiler beach. Recommend Kumsel Pide restaurant in Olu Deniz for good service and excellent food. A drive to Patara is another must for us, dining at Bolulu Osman Tlos Restaurant, a swim and a walk round the beautiful Patara site. Another must is the 12 Islands boat trip from Fethiye, wonderful day out, excellent value. We cannot fault anything and look forward to our next holiday in Jon and Sandys paradise. Special thanks to Gunul and Nevin the housemaid ; they looked after us so well.
We had another great stay in The Byre, this year we also brought my parents, who stayed in The Grannery.
They also loved it! It is so peaceful and calm, the perfect place do nothing for a week. Wonderful views from our pool, we love sitting and watching the animals in the fields. Gonul and her ladies were as lovely as ever. Fantastic food from the various great restaurants in the valley. We have already booked again for next year.
We stayed at The Byre last September/October for 10 days and still talk about it all the time. We are currently looking for a nice cottage in Italy or similar for same time this year, but really feel we have been spoilt and nothing will match up to the wonderful break we had in this beautiful village. I loved getting up with the dawn and listening to the valley wake up, the donkeys, cockerels and sheep braying and crowing is an awesome sound. The plunge pool was a delight and taking the dolmus to the local beach is a must. Well done Jon and Sandy, I imagine we will skip Italy and be back!
Have just returned form a fabulous 18 day stay at both the Granary and the Byre. We booked the whole 18 days sharing it with my 80+ year old parents, they stayed one week and my husband and I stayed for 18 days sharing our time between the 2. The first week my husband and I stayed in the Granary, my parents stayed in the Byre, we loved the Granary and requested to stay on. This was not possible because it was booked, however having moved to the Byre did not want to move back, the setting. the views etc were stupendous. The Byre is better equipped, and has been beautifully restored but most impressive is the pool and fabulous views from it. Out of the 2 I would prefer the Byre, but having said that we loved to bbq in The Granary and then curl up on the stone sofas in front of the logs burning in the open air grate and read our books, something that coul not be done in The Byre. The Byre has a standard kettle type BBQ which is portable and can be moved to the numerous niches in the gardens. The terraces at The Byre do afford fab views including The Ghost Town something the other cottages don’t have. We went the first 2 weeks in June and needed the heat from the open air fire grate after eating and therefore in that situation The Granary won, however later in the season ie 1 week later The Byre would have won hands down. The cottages are beautifully furnished and decorated, fab service provided by Gonul the manager and definitely good value. We havc travelled 5 times with Exclusiove Escapes and are now smitten with Sakli Vadi because of the combination of product and value. It should be stressed that it can not be compared with like for like with E E, as understandably the price asked by Sakli Vadi would not allow such precision as with EE, but never the less we spent 18 days at Sakli Vadi constantly saying that we had saved ourselves at least £1000 and that we could not see the justification of the extra expense.
We love the whole place so much that we have booked to return again for 2 weeks at the end of September and beginning of October.
Just one negative point, we note the previous review, a couple with their 9 month old baby. Whilst we were at The Byre we spoke to the owner of the neighbouring Cottage who commented without prompt that her guests the previous week had constantly been complaining to her of the persistent crying of the baby in The Byre and how it had spoilt their holdiay. Having spoken to both the owner of the neighbouring property and guests at Sakli Vadi all had believed that the cottages were intended to be child free. Had we been adjacent to a crying baby we would not have been overly pleased, particlularly as the properties are not completely sound proof from each other both inside and out. For us it would have spoilt the peace and ambience of the valley and our holiday. Sakli Vadi please do not book small children
We have loved the whole holiday and thank all concerned and look forward to seeing you all again.
Any potential guest is welcome to ask us any question.
We have stayed last May, 2 weeks at the Byre together with our 9 months old baby. This was our first time to have a holiday with a baby.
Well, except that The Byre is an excellent and most beautiful location, it was also perfect for a small family with a young child. Sandy & Jon placed especially for us, a baby bed and a baby chair !
It is a very calm atmosphere and the people in the village of Kayaköy are friendly and helpfull.
The Byre is , as I mentioned before, a beautiful renovated cottage, where you can find silence and a beautiful views all around. We will come back for sure
We have just got back from two weeks at The Byre and wish we were still there! The cottage exceeded our already high expectations; the house itself was clean and full of character and charm and the outside space was fabulous.
We were hoping for a hot, romantic holiday in a cottage in beautiful countryside, close to the beach and local towns, but far enough to feel secluded. That’s exactly what we got.
Many thanks to Gonul, cleaner Nevin, Jon and Sandy for a wonderful honeymoon. Looking forward to returning!
What a fantastic 2 weeks we have just spent at The Byre. The location is stunning, the views are unbelievable. We sat on the deck from 8.30am to 7.45pm most days just soaking in the sun and the perfiect setting. We have visited Kaya Valley before so we knew how wonderful all the local restaurants are and how friendly the villagers are. We would like to say a huge thank you to Jon, Sandy and their excellent staff for making our stay unforgettable.
We have stayed at The Byre 3 times now and it never disappoints. The location is wonderful, slightly remote but also has everything you want close by. Local resturants are worth visiting – see comments books. The little one at the bottom of the slope (you’ll understand when you get there) is run by a young couple. You get more food than you know what to do with – its cheap but tasty. You always get more than you order – chips, salad, cheese straw rolls plus other things. A trip around the ruined village of Kaya is a must. Turkish pancakes in the cafe across the road (by the ‘bus’ stop) is well worth it.
We will be back in the future, the cottages are wonderful.
The Byre was a little slice of heaven.
I had been looking for a nice holiday, out of the way from all the workaday stress, and immediately fell in love with the wonderful cottages of Sakli Vadi. From the moment I landed in Turkey, Sandy, Jon, and their friendly, competent staff surpassed my already sky-high hopes for the trip. Every aspect had been thought out, and it showed.
I’d recommend the cottages heartily and can’t wait to go back.
Cheers from Cambridge, Justin Hulbert
I had the pleasure of staying in this unbelievable cottage in February 2009 when I visited my sister in Bahrain. We went on a trip to Turkey (including Istanbul, Dalaman, Fethiye then onto the cottages via road). My sister is friends with Sandy and Jon, so I had a very personalised tour of the entire area. What can I say about this place! All I wanted was for all my friends and family to immediately make arrangements to get there and see this unique unbelievable place. The work that Sandy and Jon have put into these cottages, restoring them to almost original condition. I was spell-bound. Thanks Sandy and Jon for enabling me to have an experience of a life time, especially being able to explore the tiny walk-ways to the cottages, the places to eat, the food – just everything. My only hope is that I can get there again one day and take my husband! Kay MacKenzie – Shepparton, Victoria, Australia.
“Unbelievably stunning” is what entered my mind the minute I arrived at The Granary…. and that was before I’d seen the lush valley in front of me and the hills, winding roads and many hidden lanes in and around the area.
Each cottage has been painstakingly restored to its original splendour, inclusive of the comforts that today affords us.
I’ve stayed twice at Sakli Vadi now and dream of the day I return to revisit my haunting memories, courtesy of Jon, Sandy and their attentive staff.
If you’re looking for that luxurious holiday, blended with the local sights, sounds, tastes and smells that only the Turkish people can provide, this IS the place to stay.
